Specialized Academy of Computer Media and Animation
Interactive Multimedia
Students plan and execute interactive programs for educational and artistic purpose. Student learn about new and evolving formats in computer multimedia, as they create stories, games, and web-sites designed around the purpose of user navigation.

SUBJECT MATTER
Students will design and program projects on the computer that are interactive: that is, the user of the project wil determine which elements of the project they view and hear, and in what order. These media elements will include text, graphics, sound, video, animation and basic interactive quizzes. In addition, students will critique various medium for point of view, demographic targeting, and persuasive power. GRADING - All assignments will be graded on a point scale. Point to letter grade transition is as follows: 100 - 90 points = A 89 - 80 points = B 79 - 70 points = C 69 - 55 points = D Below 55 points = FAIL Grades for each grading period will be arrived at by calculating the percentage average of earned points out of total points possible. This means missed assignments can bring a grade down quickly. The student is expected to complete ALL assignments.

ASSIGNMENTS
1. NOTEBOOK - Each student shall be responsible for bringing everyday a hard bound notebook with paper and a section assigned to the class. Students will be responsible for copying down all vocabulary, art notes, lab assignments, and any other material requested by the teacher.

2. VOCABULARY - Students will begin each Monday by copying down assigned vocabulary words and their definitions in preperation for a weekly vocabulary quiz each Friday.

3. PROJECTS - Projects will be produced by using Adobe Illustrator, and Macromedia Director. Also elements of the interactive pieces will be produced in Adobe Photoshop and Final Cut Pro.

Individual projects will be:
1. Designing and producing a SACMA (Specialized Academy Of Computer Media & Animation) logo in Adobe Illustrator. The logo will include the year of the student's graduating class and a slogan. A copy of the file will be compressed and saved as a PDF (Portable Document File) for cross platform viewing.

2. Designing and producing the DVD and DVD cover art and illustrations for the students' electronic portfolio to be gathered and published in the following year.

3. Creating an interactive program under 720 Megabytes (the file size of a standard CD) for Kiosk or CD ROM delivery. The project will be based on the modern world history standards-based documentary film the student produced in an earlier class. If a student did not produce such a piece, one will be provided for them. The program will include an introductory "splash" screen, a master interface with looped audio and automatic animations, and navigation buttons that transform on mouse rollover and effectively navigate to other program elements. These elements will include the previously produced digital film, a picture gallery of images relating to the subject, a bibliography of texts related to the subject, formatted in APA format, a script of the voice-over narration the film uses, and an indepth text file produced by the student of at least three pages in length (this may be the student's junior thesis in history).

4. A project analogous to the one above, but based on the digital film about a family member the student produced in a previous class. If a student did not produce such a piece, one will be provided for them.

5. A group project analogous to numbers one and two, but more in-depth, related to a standards-based unit studied in the student's US history class. This master interface will navigate to several sublevels that relate to elements of the units, and include digital films, picture galleries and text files related to the unit. Also, an interactive quiz will be included in every sub-unit.

6. READING JOURNAL - On the second meeting of each week, students will be expected to turn in their weekly reading journal at the beginning of the period. Students will ready a two page (not counting pictures) newspaper, magazine, or internet article appropriate for school. This article must be related to multimedia or computer technology. Students will then write a one half page paragraph summarizing the article, and a one half page paragraph commenting on the article. THis journal will not be graded for grammar etc., and will be awarded full credit as long as the above criteria are met.

7. HOMEWORK- Periodic homework assignments will be given beyond the weekly standing assignmnets. Students are expected to complete all of these assignments on time. When homework is due it will only be accepted in the homework box, AT THE BEGINNING OF THE PERIOD !!!!!. Homework turned in after the homework has been collected will be considered late.

8. LATE WORK- Late work will be accepted BUT NOT FOR COMPLETE CREDIT. An assignments which is one day late will lose 30% percent credit. An assignment two days late will lose 40% credit. No late work will be accepted after two days. Students with an excused absence for the day of the assignment will be alloed to make the work up with no "late fees". Students with an unexcused absence (a "cut" ) will not not be able to make up the work at all. 9. TESTS- End of term tests will be given each semester, and will be worth 400 points.

10. QUIZZES - Weekly vocabulary quizzes will be given on the last class meeting of each week and will be worth 100 points. PRESENTATIONS & CRITIQUES A major component of this course is a speaking segment where students present projects, or milestone toward the completion of projects, and open their work up to the class for constructive criticism.
